A perfect partnership In creating the sailing base and Qingdao precinct for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Allen Jack+Cottier worked with the international multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Kellogg Brown and Root (now KBR).

An expansive brief Located in Shandong Province, and regarded as one of China’s most liveable cities, seaside Qingdao hosted all the 2008 Olympic Games’ sailing events. The brief included not only the sailing base but also masterplanning and urban design for the surrounding Qingdao precinct. This included residential accommodation, an Olympic village, a five-star hotel, commercial office towers, international convention centre, overseas passenger terminal and maritime museum.

All points meet at Qingdao AJ+C’s design for Qingdao manages to balance wooded parkland on the eastern and southern foreshores with the architectural modernity of the sailing base to its north and west.
