Converting an inner-Sydney heritage warehouse into contemporary student housing was a process of preservation and innovation for AJ+C.
Adaptive reuse Allen Jack+Cottier’s architectural design for Australia St Student Housing incorporated conversion of a Camperdown heritage warehouse. The development features 160 beds – studios and a small number of three- and four-bed apartments – aimed at University of Sydney students. Its three floors face out over a central courtyard, with shared common areas on each.
Natural sunlight and ventilation A ‘parasol’ roof suspended over the courtyard allows the sunlight in. The roof also scoops the breeze inwards, providing natural air circulation and protection from the elements. An in-depth wind analysis ascertained the roof’s optimum orientation and form.
Intelligent design Using prefabricated bathrooms quickened construction and minimised penetration of the building’s heritage fabric. The facade and structure were preserved, with some heritage elements exposed as part of the heritage interpretation. Additional ESD initiatives included bicycle and motorbike spaces and a car-share parking space.
