Botanica Stage 81
data, awards, description –
Expert architectural and urban design sees a neglected heritage area transformed into a vibrant residential community.
A sensitive approach Allen Jack+Cottier was commissioned to design the adaptive reuse of early 20th-century patient wards and staff housing in the Lidcombe Hospital Heritage Precinct. Turning these buildings into 21st-century homes required a sensitive, specialist design approach, and we worked closely with heritage consultants and Conservation Management Plans. It was imperative our designs fit the buildings, not the reverse, and we maximised their character and heritage significance.
Beyond the brief Although initially engaged to convert the original ward buildings only, our role eventually included other sites within the precinct. Our portfolio went on to comprise both the repurposing of existing buildings on the Botanica site and the design of new ones.
A new lease of life Further adaptation took place in preparation for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and accommodated a reception, catering facilities and media technical spaces.
