AJ+C’s 1990 design for Victoria’s Domaine Chandon winery encourages viticultural education, discovery and exploration.
From vine to bottle Located in the Yarra Valley, Victoria’s winemaking mecca, Domaine Chandon transforms an otherwise industrial experience into a sensory adventure. The winery’s design promotes customer education in a format similar to that of Moët and Chandon’s wineries in France and California.
Leading the visitor journey The AJ+C design team planned a visitor’s path leading from the industrial – wine press, sieve, fermentation tanks and bottling plant – to the heart of the winery, its vineyards. This journey offers insight into all aspects the wine production process, concluding with wine tasting and cellar-door sales.
Style and sophistication The winery, formerly a disused dairy site, demonstrates the style and sophistication of the quintessential Australian winery. As noted in Architecture Australia in 1996, AJ+C’s development ‘sets a precedent in Australia for the celebration of wine’. Its popularity continues, too, attracting over 100,000 visitors each year.
