Hainan Duty Free City

Hainan Island, China

data, awards, description

Allen Jack+Cottier delivered a masterplan and architectural design for this large mixed use development on Hainan Island, China. The development centres upon a duty free shopping village, which has been designed with the hot and humid local climatic conditions in mind.

To reduce the carbon footprint of the project and avoid a fully enclosed mall we took inspiration from the canopy of the banyan tree and used shading to create a sheltered outdoor environment.

In addition to the shopping village a resort hotel and marina was placed on an island in the river that bisects the site. Serviced apartments/villas are catered to by a retail marketplace and entertainment and cultural facilities including restaurants, spas, and bars.
