A fresh approach to early learning
Designed and built to Passive House standards, this early learning campus enables indoor / outdoor teaching, wellness and safety, fun and discovery, with high sustainability and heritage values.
Meriden Lingwood Campus in the Sydney suburb of Strathfield is a pre K-Kindergarten school for girls and boys, consolidating a Preparatory Campus with a purpose-built space for 132 pupils and 12 staff.
Inducting young children into the joys of discovery and learning is paramount to Meriden’s Fidelis Model of education, and the school also wanted to have a light carbon footprint, high sustainability values and reduced operating costs long term.
A holistic design approach saw six lofty new classrooms built to Passive House standards – by far the most stringent sustainability measure you can build to. The new schoolrooms deliver exceptional indoor air quality, temperature stability and noise reduction. The heritage-listed Lingwood House is converted into a library and staff/parent space. Between the new and old are verandahs, pocket gardens and COLA spaces, extending the learning outdoors, with an interactive playwall straddling the divide.
To make the campus safe, car-parking was reduced, garden and play space increased around Lingwood House and its teardrop garden – both sensitively renewed for greater presence within the campus and community.
