Rather than adopting traditional church architecture, Our Lady of Fatima’s inclusive, communal design derives from the 1963 Second Vatican Council.
Both sanctuary and meeting place Our Lady of Fatima is a Catholic Church and parish centre in the southern Sydney suburb of Caringbah. AJ+C designed the church with the aim of bringing the community closer together, and the church now acts as a local gathering place.
Contemporary translation Our Lady of Fatima’s architecture is a modern interpretation of current Catholic doctrine and the role of the church in the community. Theatre-like, its design sees the altar take centre stage, forming a focal point for surrounding parishioners.
Evocative design The space maintains an aura of mystery and reverence, while also calling up ‘memories’ of traditional church forms.It features a timber roof structure, circular windows and rich colouring, while aspects of traditional gothic roof carpentry is embodied in the portal frames. The church seats 600 and features two separate chapels.
