Penfolds Magill Estate

Magill, Adelaide, SA, Australia

data, awards, description

On a site rich in wine-making history, bold contemporary structures provide a dramatic counterpoint to the beauty of Penfolds Magill Estate’s historic buildings.

The birthplace of Grange Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold settled in Magill in 1844, and it was here that the first vintages of Grange Hermitage were made. Sensitivity and innovation have shaped the development.New offices, conference and function facilities, wine storage and tasting areas feature, as well as entirely new buildings housing a warehouse and restaurant.

A revelation of old and new A new road layout sets off the village character of the historic buildings, keeping vehicle activity to a minimum. The additions that have grown up around the buildings over time have been stripped away to reveal the strength of their original forms. Bold new structures with clean lines and generosity of light and space provide a counterpoint to the original winery, never dominating the historic core.
