Rose Bay Marina Gangway

Rose Bay, Sydney, NSW, Australia

data, awards, description

Rose Bay Marina Gangway matches the graceful timber curves of classic marine design with creative modern engineering.

Marine inspiration Given a brief for the gangways, handrails and service pillars of a new luxury marina, Peter Ireland, Principal of AJ+C, turned to classic yacht design. The Rose Bay Marina Gangway references the shapes and materials of the marina’s berthed yachts as well as the natural environment of Sydney Harbour. Floating above the water, the gangway is a light, graceful arch incorporating exciting marine technology.

Engineering expertise A rigid central conduit incorporates ‘utility raceways’, carrying water and power cables to the floating pontoons. The graceful shape of the balustrade was developed using physical and computer modelling, creating a sculptural yet liquid form.

An elegant solution The gleaming, angular carbon fibre pedestals of the gangway are a response to a design constraint – the limited bending radius of the heavy cabling housed inside them.
