Schaeffer Fine Arts Library, University of Sydney
data, awards, description –
A synthesis of both modernist and humanist ideals, Allen Jack+Cottier’s interior renovation of this fine arts library has resulted in an inspirational light-filled space, which enhances the processes of learning and sharing of ideas.
The scheme provided additional space for library and multimedia facilities, inserting elements of contemporary design into the existing fabric, while maintaining a respect for the existing building and the contribution of its form and materials to this significant precinct.
Decorative schemes for individual rooms were chosen in consultation with the benefactor after whom each room was named and to reflect the special collection that it houses. These spaces hold high the aspirations and hopes of their benefactors. The quality of materials, furniture, lighting and finishes are unprecedented in comparison to libraries of other public institutions of a similar size.
Allen Jack+Cottier were also contracted to design and document all of the signage within the library.
