data, awards, description –
This joint venture competition design took its inspiration from the Qatar landscape.
A collaborative approach The Sidra Medical Research Centre Staff Housing design was part of an international competition run by the Qatar Foundation. AJ+C embarked upon a joint venture with Arup and Woods Bagot, ready to provide full service delivery for the project, if successful.
Creating a neighbourhood Named ‘Desert Canopy’, the tender was for a large-scale residential development on a 20-hectare site. It comprised over 2,000 self-contained apartments and villas – staff housing for the centre’s doctors, nurses and administrative staff. Each of three connected compounds included community facilities such as a pool, store, restaurant, mosque, daycare and indoor sports centre.
Desert Canopy The design was inspired by native geometry and arts, as well as by the beauty of Qatar’s mountains and sand dunes. The Qatar Foundation, however, opted against proceeding with any of competition tenders, due to economic reasons.
