“… a fine example of how affordable housing can be delivered without forsaking quality design and environmental responsiveness.” – Jury comments, Urban Design Institute Australia (UDIA) Excellence Awards, 2003
Interactive atmosphere Located in Newtown, Sydney University Village offers adaptable, affordable student accommodation for 650 residents. It also features a function centre, tavern, cafés and bistro, learning centres and meeting places for students and the public. Allen Jack+Cottier’s design for the village promotes a social, supportive environment, fostering a feeling of community.
Linked with its surroundings The village is scaled to actively participate in the Newtown streetscape. The 1.48-hectare site is a conduit for students walking to the university from Newtown’s vibrant King Street. This adds to its commercial viability and cements its place in the community.
Award winning In 2003, the design received the NSW Urban Taskforce, Excellence Award – Residential – and the Urban Development Institute of Australia, NSW, Award for Excellence in Urban Development – High Density Housing & Mixed Use Development.
