‘The Material City’ Book Launch
AJ+C recently attended Brickworks for the launch of ‘The Material City’ by Ron Ringer. The book explores urban densification and the themes of old/new, adaptation, building density, apartment sizes, affordability, transport and connectivity through the work of 50 leading Australian architects.
AJ+C’s WAF shortlisted project Urbanest Darling Square 1 features as a case study. Conceived as being part of the ‘city wall’ in the new Darling Harbour precinct; the design of the western elevation facing Ultimo has a thick wall with deep set openings honoring the robust masonry forms of the Powerhouse Museum and old wool stores in Ultimo. The eastern elevation facing the city and harbour beyond, uses glazing and faceted metal panels that reflect the rippling effect of wave patterns on the harbour.
The case studies are followed by a collection of “Michael’s essays” exploring the urban condition, including AJ+C Principal Michael Heenan’s ‘Growing Sydney’, which examines Sydney’s major densification issues and offers some ideas on how to address them.
