Media Release: The Residences, Cardinal Freeman
Ashfield, NSW, Australia
‘The Cardinal Freeman sets a new benchmark for seniors living. Providing amenity and community through thoughtfully designed and planned new buildings integrated into an historic site.’
Setting a new benchmark in urban design and seniors living, The Residences by AJ+C for developer Stockland, breathes new life into a heritage site in Ashfield, in Sydney’s Inner West. – Peter Ireland, Design, AJ+C
The Residences at Cardinal Freeman is a paradigm shift in independent seniors living. Rather than separation, its focus is on community integration, active retirement lifestyles and ageing in place. The master plan and buildings by AJ+C unlocked the site to deliver a greater focus on open space and public domain with landscaped pocket parks and a central Village Green, that strengthens connections to the neighbourhood. A key urban strategy was realigning a major through-site road, to make movement more legible and layered, to preference pedestrians and weave that site into the surrounding street network. It also establishes a clear arrival point for the community of residents. All apartments feature full accessibility with wide doors and hallways and reinforced bathroom walls for future modification. Facilities include a resort-style health club, indoor lap pool, gymnasium and theatre arranged around the Village Green. For peace of mind, the Cardinal Freeman project incorporates a separate high-care facility on site, allowing residents to stay connected to their local community if their health-care needs change over time.
