Three Chimney House
data, awards, description –
On a rocky bluff facing north over rugged bushland, Three Chimneys House celebrates the restorative powers of nature and the comfort of hearth and home.
Inspired by history In the Australian bush, ruins of old houses can be found, destroyed except for the fireplace and chimney. These old fireplaces, symbolic of the central and enduring place in our lives of warmth, family and community, provided the spark of inspiration for Three Chimneys House.
Of its place Designed around three stone fireplaces, the house reflects its rugged surroundings in large planes of sandstone refined into a series of platforms following the form of the bluff. Similarly, the roof’s folded drape of slate shingles echoes the shapes of the surrounding landscape. Radiating concrete walls allow natural vegetation to penetrate the spaces between rooms, integrating the house with its setting.
Bush retreat Offering relief from urban living, Three Chimneys House is defined by warmth and the forms and materials of the bush landscape.
