Watersports World

Hai He River, Tianjin, China

data, awards, description

AJ+C’s competition entry for a sporting and recreational facility in Tianjin, China, took inspiration from water, yachts and the mighty eagle.

A landmark facility Allen Jack+Cottier and the Beijing Institute of Architecture and Design (BIAD) were invited to participate in a limited competition. The brief was to create an important recreational facility along the Hai He River in Tianjin. A groundbreaking watersports building would accompany luxury apartments, a hotel and a new commercial area.

A watery wonderland The main building, Watersports World, was designed for myriad activities including swimming, diving, waterslides, indoor surfing, water polo, basketball, tennis and squash. The design also provided for sports medicine doctors and physiotherapists.

Setting the scene Tianjin has long been one of the most important commercial and shipping cities in the north of China. The traditional cultural representation of water and waves was the inspiration for the design. It also evoked the billowing sails of America’s Cup yachts and the eagle, Tianjin’s city bird.
