Announcement: Sarah Slattery Awarded 2024 Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship

In an exciting recognition of her visionary approach to architecture and urban design, Sarah Slattery, Studio Lead, Design at AJC Architects, has been awarded a 2024 Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship by the NSW Architects Registration Board.

Sarah’s research proposal, Let’s Get Moving: New Directions in Sports Architecture and Urban Planning, focuses on creating innovative architectural solutions to encourage greater community participation in physical activity. Her study will take her across Europe, where she will examine cutting-edge sports and hybrid facilities. By exploring these international models, Sarah aims to inspire more inclusive and accessible designs tailored to Australian communities, ensuring spaces cater to individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

The Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship is Australia’s largest and longest-running bequest of its kind, designed to foster globally informed architects who make meaningful local impacts. It provides recipients with funding of $15,000 to $30,000 to cover travel, accommodation, and related expenses, culminating in a report that shares the findings with the architectural community.

Congratulations, Sarah, on this well-deserved recognition. We look forward to seeing how your research shapes the future of sports architecture and urban planning in Australia.

My research aims to promote more participation in physical activity through architecture and urban design solutions. By studying sports and hybrid facilities in Europe, I hope to bring new ideas and fresh approaches to Australian design, expanding and diversifying our current sports offerings to be more inclusive for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
