Harris Street Studio
data, awards, description –
The series of connected interior and exterior spaces that make up inner-city Sydney’s Harris Street Studio is an elegant, integrated solution to a complex set of design issues.
The brief To bring together a dilapidated wing of an aging urban building, a small damp courtyard and a neighbouring heritage building to provide viable commercial space with parking.
Unifying the space Harris Street Studio is now a mini ‘campus’ of studios clustered around a central atrium with arresting landscaping features. Industrial materials in a muted palette play off existing warm brickwork in an appealing series of spaces that draws the building’s separate elements together.
A secret green space in the city The studio’s stair system has been carefully designed to provide clear views to the bamboo-filled courtyard, creating a serene and light environment. The hidden courtyard, punctuated by explosions of greenery, provides a delightfully usable exterior space as well as energising the connecting studios.
