Jacobs House Revisited in Houses Magazine

As a founding partner of AJC, Russell played an important role in shaping the practice and its early body of work. Jacobs House is among a significant collection of residential projects he designed across Sydney’s North Shore.

At the heart of the design was the idea of creating a “restful background for day-to-day living.” The need for privacy from surrounding houses shaped a partially introverted plan, with rooms arranged around screened courtyard spaces. Warm brick, red quarry tiles, naturally finished timber and slate formed a restrained material palette.

More than 60 years after its completion, Jacobs House remains the subject of architectural interest. Its inclusion in Houses Issue 170 offers an opportunity to revisit Russell’s work and an important part of AJC’s architectural history.
