Moore Theological College

As a base of theological research and scholarship, Moore Theological College in Sydney has been preparing men and women for Christian ministry for more than 150 years. 

AJC has a long relationship with Moore College, having master-planned its Newtown campus, first in 1993, and again in 2008, for a projected doubling of enrolments from 300 to 600 students by 2020. These plans involved the evaluation of existing building stock, staged future built works and rationalisation of traffic in a dynamic city-fringe precinct. 

Our work also included design and delivery of the Resource and Research Centre, located prominently at the apex of the campus (at1 King Street). The centre houses new lecture theatres, meeting and breakout spaces, stitched into the existing site fabric, along with an additional 2,700m² of leasable commercial space. 

A range of new classrooms and larger lecture spaces were designed with the flexibility to be divided into smaller learning areas. As well as the functional imperatives of integrating and adapting new technologies, a focus of the design is to enhance the quality of daily relationships between college members as a faith-based community of students and scholars. 

Architecturally, the form and materiality respond elegantly to the site with a two-storey sandstone podium bringing the iconic King Street wall to a satisfying conclusion at the apex of the site with a glass form floating above the stone.
