The public face of Macquarie University’s Robert Menzies College, this new student housing building accommodates campus growth and promotes sustainability.
A striking addition An infill development, the new Robert Menzies College Student Accommodation building seeks to ‘complete’ the fabric of the college. Allowing for an increase in student numbers, it provides 103 new bedrooms, plus seminar rooms, common areas and a new courtyard.
Both contemporary and complementary Stylistically, its materials, textures and elements of form sit well with the site’s existing structures, yet the building also stands boldly on its own. L-shaped, it forms a new perimeter to the site’s north-east, and its modern visual presence along Waterloo Road contributes to the campus’ ‘entry statement’.
Incorporating ESD Designed with passive solar principles in mind, the building provides custom sunshading elements, cross ventilation to all common areas and corridors, insulated facades and thermal mass. Vertical blades are both practical and add detail to the east and west facades.
