Suqian Grand Canal Resort

Suqian, Jiangsu Province, China

data, awards, description

Created in conjunction with ASA Architects, AJ+C’s masterplanning and schematic design incorporates efficiency measures and aspects of the Chinese landscape.

Grand in name and nature Suqian Grand Canal Resort includes a five star hotel, serviced apartments, villas, a retail precinct and golf course. Completed in 2010, the resort encompasses a variety of landscaped spaces, differentiated by contrasting textures and patterns.

Designed around water The Grand Canal is the resort’s design source, and water is the key to moving through the site. An artificial channel draws water from the canal, forming an axis leading to the hotel’s atrium and through the resort. This intersection of waterway and lobby embodies a key concept of the Chinese landscape: the elemental dialogue between water and mountains – represented here by tall buildings.

Ecologically Sustainable Design The design’s many efficiency measures include roof gardens, water harvesting, reed ponds, greywater recycling and double glazing systems are used throughout the resort.
