Brewarrina Multipurpose Sports Centre

Located around 780km northwest of Sydney, the Brewarrina Multipurpose Sports Complex is a community, recreation and cultural facility designed to support health, wellbeing and social connection while celebrating the unique identity of Brewarrina and Ngemba Country.

Brewarrina has an ancient and enduring history as a place of gathering and is home to Baiame’s Ngunnhu, the Brewarrina fish traps – an ancient system of dry-stone rock weirs and pens constructed in the Barwon River to herd and catch fish, and considered among the oldest human-made structures in the world. This cultural context informs a contemporary civic facility that brings people together through sport, recreation, culture and learning.

The complex incorporates an indoor sports court, gymnastics hall, gym, youth hub and flexible community spaces organised around a central community foyer. A new civic forecourt creates a town square with shaded seating, water play and cooling elements, native landscaping, interpretive storytelling and an outdoor court supporting community events and regional sporting competitions.

Responding to Brewarrina’s remote location and extreme climate, the design combines passive design principles, a high-performance building envelope, indirect evaporative cooling and rooftop solar generation to reduce energy consumption and improve comfort. Low-carbon construction is also central to the approach, with biogenic materials including NSW timber and straw used alongside prefabricated building components.

More than a sports centre, the Brewarrina Multipurpose Sports Complex is conceived as a contemporary gathering place grounded in the culture, landscape and community of Ngemba Country, while demonstrating a climate-responsive approach to community infrastructure in regional Australia.
