Melita Stadium
AJC architects and Environmental Partnership (EP) were commissioned by Cumberland Council in July 2023 to develop a new master plan for the Melita Stadium precinct.
The master plan considers the optimum future redevelopment of the facility to meet the requirements of high-level football competition and the needs of the incumbent user stakeholders. This process considered the potential for the development of a Centre of Excellence for Football on the site.
There are several registered Aboriginal sites around the immediate Duck River area including spiritual, cultural and significant women’s sites. The traditional Aboriginal clans of the Auburn region are the Wangal and Wategora. More recently, the site has gained significant cultural significance as the home of the beloved Parramatta FC, formerly known as the Parramatta Eagles and earlier, as the Parramatta Melita Eagles which was established by Maltese migrants in 1956.
AJC’s proposed new stadium hinges around a sequence of attractive public spaces – a landscaped arrival plaza leading to the ground floor covered terrace and canteen; and the upper terrace which leads to 2 function rooms. The site planning facilitates optimal views to the field and provides ideal sightlines for 1000 spectators.
The proposal is for a modern, best-practice elite sports facility which honours the rich history of the site and seeks to extend it into the future.
The architectural expression is a crisp and uncluttered, giving a clear expression of the concrete spectating ribbon at the base and the timber-framed roof at the top.
