Myuna Bay Dining Hall & Conference Centre

The Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre is located on the western shore of Lake Macquarie approximately 6.5km north-east of Dora Creek. The Myuna Dining Hall is the focus of a remote wilderness site designed to promote fitness and health.

At Myuna Bay, we returned to first principles—light, air, shelter, and connection to place. The building doesn’t shout; it breathes. Its roof floats to capture light and drive natural ventilation, while wide verandahs open it to the landscape. It’s proof that sustainable design can be simple, timeless, and deeply human.

This 1200m² dining hall and conference centre at Myuna Bay Sport & Recreation Camp is the focus of a remote wilderness site designed to promote fitness and health. The communal spaces, hall, seminars room, Internet café and facilities including a commercial kitchen are united under one soaring roof plane. The building stands amongst a canopy of large trees and opens along its sunny northern elevation to embrace the landscape.

The Centre fully caters for up to 300 people during extended stays. Activities include swimming, basketball, tennis, rowing, water skiing, cricket, football, bicycling, abseiling and rope climbing.

The building’s dramatic shape is the result of the response to the environment. The flying roof faces the sea and is used to cool the building in summer by generating a convection current through the building. In winter, a heat plume forms below the roof to insulate the space below. Water collected from the large roof is reused for irrigation. Solar heated water is pumped through the floor slab in winter to aid in heating.
