PCYC Mt Druitt

The sports hall creates a dynamic and flexible environment where young people can participate, belong and thrive. A landscaped courtyard between the original and new buildings forms the social heart of the site—a welcoming “third space” for gathering, play and exchange.

A translucent polycarbonate façade wraps the new sports courts, filtering soft daylight and casting silhouettes of nearby trees. By night, it glows like a lantern along Luxford Road—a beacon of safety and inclusion. This is also Australia’s first-ever use of a high-performance double-skin polycarbonate façade system, setting a new benchmark for innovative building envelopes.

Sustainability is embedded throughout. Bricks will be locally manufactured in Warragamba using waste streams, and the carbon-positive straw bale panels—Australia’s first use of pre-fabricated straw walls on a building of this scale—demonstrate the project’s commitment to advancing high-performance biogenic materials in the construction industry. Passive design strategies further enhance thermal comfort, even in the extremes of western Sydney’s climate.

The design is guided by the principles of Connection, Movement and Place, made legible through the open relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, the flowing landscape, and the grounded material palette. A Dharug-led design panel played a vital role in shaping the project’s response to Country.

PCYC Mt Druitt is a thoughtful community facility —it is a place of potential, holding space for sport, storytelling, learning and belonging. It is architecture that is attuned to its environment and responsive to Country.
