AJC Architects Designs Transformative Expansion for PCYC Mount Druitt
June 2025
Blacktown City Council is excited to announce the expansion of the Mount Druitt Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), a major project designed by AJC Architects that will provide even more opportunities for young people to stay active, engaged, and connected.
The $25.4 million expansion, funded by the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants (WSIG) program, will more than double the size of the existing PCYC building. Designed by AJC Architects in collaboration with Barra-gi Consulting as First Nations Lead, the project more than doubles the existing facility’s footprint while embedding deeply considered social, cultural and environmental values into every aspect of its design.
AJC Architects has taken a thoughtful approach to designing a facility that supports both structured and informal activities, ensuring the space is welcoming, safe, and inspiring for young people. The expansion will include two new multipurpose indoor courts, a new reception and administration area, new toilet facilities, and indoor and outdoor gathering areas.
Design development was enriched by consultation with a Dharug-led design panel, whose insights shaped a grounded response to the cultural and ecological context of the site. This influence is expressed through materiality, landscaping and form. Locally manufactured bricks made from recycled waste, pre-fabricated straw bale panels (carbon positive and highly insulative), and a hybrid ventilation strategy reflect a holistic approach to sustainability. The sports hall itself is conceived as a thermally sealed “esky”—performing comfortably even during periods of extreme heat.
AJC Director John Whittingham highlighted the importance of designing spaces that foster community connections and personal growth.
“The new spaces will provide opportunities for sport and recreation but also act as social hubs where young people can gather, learn, and build relationships.”
The new additions will expand the range of activities available to the community, from basketball and futsal to martial arts and boxing, ensuring that young people have access to high-quality facilities that support both their physical and personal development.
Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting underscored the community impact of the expansion.
“This isn’t just about adding new courts—it’s about giving young people a place where they feel they belong, a place that supports their aspirations and development,” Mayor Bunting said.
NSW Member for Mount Druitt Edmond Atalla echoed this sentiment, calling the project a game-changer for the local community.
“This investment will create lasting positive change, strengthen community connections, and inspire the next generation to dream big,” he said.
PCYC NSW CEO Ben Hobby praised the expansion, saying, “The extension to the PCYC Mount Druitt facility will enhance the court sports offering we can provide to the community, and the additional youth hub area will deepen the positive impact we continue to have for young people in Blacktown City.”
The PCYC expansion is part of a broader $86.9 million investment in Mount Druitt, which also includes the Dawson Mall redevelopment, the expansion of the Mount Druitt Library and Community Hub, the upgrade of the Mount Druitt Swimming Centre, and the creation of a First Nations Cultural Hub.
AJC Architects is proud to contribute to this transformation, delivering a project that will have a lasting impact on the lives of young people in the community. Construction is set to begin in 2026, aligning with the WSIG program’s timeline.
Our design for PCYC Mount Druitt is about creating more than just a building—it’s about shaping an environment that encourages young people to thrive.
John Whittingham, AJC Director
