St Andrew’s College Thyne Reid Link Building

A new seven-storey student accommodation village augmenting and linking heritage buildings at The University of Sydney.

The new student accommodation for St Andrew’s College in Sydney’s inner West includes a new seven-storey link building, refurbishment to Thyne and Reid including an additional level on Reid and infill to Thyne’s western facade.

St Andrew’s College is made up of several historic buildings comprising some of the most important heritage fabric of the University of Sydney. It was designed to create a strong dialogue between the historic College precinct and the new extension.

As well as adding 88 rooms to the new consolidated accommodation building, the project connects existing college buildings, enhancing the collegiate experience and atmosphere.

Materiality of the new extension complements the existing palette of Main and Hanks buildings, either using traditional materials such as sandstone and slate or reinterpreting traditional elements, such as lead light or castellation, in a contemporary way.

Common areas feature large operable windows delivering natural light and cross-ventilation to the interiors, now sporting contemporary furniture and vibrant colour.

Rooms are designed to be flexible and divisible, enabling large spaces to be re-arranged in multiple configurations to suit different purposes and varied levels of social interaction or study. These spaces include games areas, common study areas, private study areas, music rooms and smaller spaces for one to two people to gather.

A combination of dorm-style studio rooms, ensuite studios and group apartments with kitchenettes are incorporated within the development. Existing student rooms within the Thyne and Reid buildings have also been refurbished making them more contemporary and improving their amenity.
